HISTORY OF COFFEE IN INDONESIA

Our History

The history of coffee in Indonesia began in 1696 when the Dutch brought coffee plants from Malabar, India, to Java. The initial attempt to set up a plantation in Kedawung failed due to the plants being damaged by earthquakes and floods. The second attempt made in 1699 was far more successful. Sample plants from Java were sent to the Netherlands for further study at the Amsterdam Botanical Garden. The results from these studies allowed the Dutch to expand the area of coffee cultivation to Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali, Timor and other islands in Indonesia.

In 1878 almost all coffee plantations in Indonesia, especially those in the lowlands were damaged by leaf rust disease or Hemileia Vastatrix (HV). At that time all the coffee plants in Indonesia were Arabica. To cope with the decimation of the crops, the Dutch brought in a new species of Liberica coffee that was thought to be more resistant to leaf rust disease. Sadly, the Liberica species was also found to be prone to leaf rust disease. Then in 1907, the Dutch brought in another species called Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora). This time their effort was successful, and even until present day the Robusta coffee plantations in the lowlands of Indonesia use the same crop.

After the Independence of Indonesia in 1945, the entire plantations of Indonesia were nationalized. Overnight the Netherlands ceased being the world’s leading coffee supplier.
